Von Bose/Turmbach

Beginning work ... already I see some improvement for my method. Earlier today I hit a stumbling point over the drums ... then I found the Von Bose re-enactors website and had a good depiction of the drummers. I have kept to the "standard" of painting a stand of figures a day to maintain traction as well as to " climb the pile of lead (pewter) I have.

The Hesse Cassel army was based on the Prussian army of the time and was among the most professional in Europe. The 8th infantry regiment came to the American shores as the Regiment von Trümbach and changed names a couple years later when Carl von Bose became the regiment's Chef, or commander. Von Trümbach/Bose participated in many of the major events of the war, including the actions in New York, Stono Ferry, Eutaw Springs, Savannah, Charleston, Guilford Courthouse and Yorktown. At Guilford Courthouse the regiment received special note for it's bravery as they fought back-to-back to battle foes on both sides. The main body of the regiment surrendered with Cornwallis's army at Yorktown. The Grenadier company remained in New York and returned to Hesse Cassel from there. Regiment von Bose was raised as the Regiment von Shöepping and served with distinction in the Seven Year's War as the Regiment von Mansbach. The red neck stocks worn by the regiment signify it is a veteran regiment.

A treasured gift

Well this morning I woke up and had a wonderful surprise .... My father knowing my love for the French Irish Brigade bought me Dillon's regiment. With Clare's Regiment that means I am already 1/3 of the way to having the whole Brigade. Both regiments would on paper consist of 12 Fusilier Companies and a grenadier company after the 1744 Ordnance. Each company wound consist of 50 rank and file which in reality comes very close to the Die Kreigskunst established guidelines. It is well known in war time the army swelled the ranks with additional recruits.

The Irish Brigade in French Service has been an obsession of mine I have them in 15mm which I gave to my father two years ago. It was when I decided to switch to 28mm due to the little one. That and most of my 15's were lead. I am excited a the good fortune.

I am curious did they combine their grenadier companies into a composite Battalion? Does anyone know?

In tribute to Giles and the Perry brothers... here is my Queen's Rangers. They are not complete, tonight I will come closer to completing the Battalion... then it is cavalry and the skirmishers.

My concept indulges my love for legionary corps. Maybe this period (AWI) and the SYW, WAS holds my attention so. I have The British Legion (sans the infantry) and Lee's legion here to paint as well ... oddly lots of green .... Luckily I have my Hessians primed and prepped for painting.

I realize now after each stand I complete I learn something knew about Painting 28's. Further the realization hit me as I am painting my last stand of the Queen's ranger Battalion that I will have to go back and touch up a few things and maybe re-paint for a sense of satisfaction.

I have already started to lay the base coats on the Hessian von Bose regiment. I am going to mount them on 6 casting bases.

Volontaires Etrangers de Clermont-Prince

Raised in May of 1758 and composed originally 16 Companies of Cavalry, 2 Companies of Grenadiers and 11 Companies of Infantry. Light corps was reorganized along the same lines as the Legion of Flanders with 8 Companies of Light Infantry, one of grenadiers and 8 of Cavalry. Before you are the 8 Companies of Light Infantry. in the campaign of 1759 the fought with the Fisher's Corps and gained some distinction in the capture of two colors. They were as the Legion de Conde' disbanded in 1776. They were purchased off eBay and I plan to round the Petite corps out with its mounted complement and grenadier company with the Front Rank SYW range.

Die Kriegskunst

As many would know from reading my blog I am mainly interested in the AWI not in just the American Continent, but I am also interested in the Sub-Continent as well. I have, up until the switch to British Grenadier and 28mm, been a Warfare in the Age of Reason fan. I am not discounting or disposing of the rules, but after a pleasant correspondence with one of the authors of Die Kriegskunst (by whom I found I own several of his books!) I switched rule sets and well I am collecting SYW as well to include the French and Indian War and Lally vs Clive on the Subcontinent. Above is the Clare regiment in French service I purchased from a fellow in New Zealand.

Surprising turn out at AWI Board game

My daughter decided, much to her father and grandfather's delight, to assist her grandfather in beating her colonial commanding father in a quick soda and nuts AWI board game. It was all over in 1778 a Guards-Hessian Bayonet charge wiped out the Continentals of Washington at the 2nd battle of Boston. The rebellion was in shambles and the Crown forces had occupied Charleston and Philadelphia... even after the British aide de camp ran off with the Crown replacement blocks to play with them in her room.
